Students can’t see a draft course. Before you publish it, tell Lena who can join and how the final grade is made up. The course’s Owner and its Teachers can do this.

Set it up and publish

1

Open the course’s Settings

Open the course and choose the Settings tab.
2

Choose who can join

A rule names a group of students who can find the course and join it, such as 100-level students in the Department of Psychology. Under Who can join, choose Add rule. Pick All faculties or Select faculty, then All departments or Select department. Add Levels to narrow it, or leave them empty to include every level. Choose Add rule.

Add more rules for more groups. A K-12 school picks grades and arms instead.
3

Set the grade breakdown

The grade breakdown decides how much assignments, quizzes and exams each count toward a student’s final grade. Under Grade breakdown, set the Assignment weight (%), Quiz weight (%) and Exam weight (%). They must add up to 100. A new course starts at 20, 30 and 50. Choose Save.

4

Publish

Choose Publish at the top of the course, then Publish again to confirm. Students your rules cover can now find the course and join it.
5

Share the entry code

Choose ⋮ (More actions) at the top of the course, then Copy entry code. Share it with your students in a message, on a slide or on the board.
The More actions menu open with Copy entry code at the top

The entry code is in the course’s More actions menu.

What students do next

In Lena for Students, students covered by your rules see the course in their list of courses to join. Anyone with the entry code can join too, even if no rule covers them. Once they’ve joined, they appear on the course’s People tab. You can’t add students yourself. See join a course.

Stop or reopen enrolment

New courses accept students from the start. To stop anyone new joining, go to Enrollment on the Settings tab and turn off Accepting new students. Students already in the course keep their access. To let students join again, turn it back on and choose Accept students.

Good to know

  • Publishing can’t be undone. A published course doesn’t go back to draft. You can still edit its details and settings while it runs.
  • Once a course has a rule for who can join, it must keep at least one. To change your only rule, add the new one first, then remove the old one.
  • You can change the weights while the course runs, from the same Settings tab.
  • The entry code isn’t shown on a course that has ended.

Troubleshooting

The three weights don’t add up to 100. Choose Go to settings, change the weights under Grade breakdown until they total 100, and choose Save.
You haven’t said who can join yet. Choose Go to settings, then Add rule.
A rule you already have includes that group, such as “All faculties”. To narrow it down, remove the wider rule first.
It’s the last rule on the course. Add the new rule first, then remove this one.
Check that the course is published and that Accepting new students is on. A student sees the course in their list only if one of your rules covers their department and level. If none does, give them the entry code.
