A published course has two tabs that tell you how it’s going. Assessments is the gradebook: every student’s grade, weighted by the course’s grade breakdown. Engagement shows how students use the course. Owners and teachers see both; assistants see Engagement only.

The gradebook

Open the course and choose the Assessments tab. There’s a row per student and a column per category, such as “Assignments (3) · 20%”, then the Total.
  • Each category shows its weighted share of the final grade, with the raw score beneath. The three categories add up to the Total, out of 100%.
  • Published work counts from the day it’s published, if it’s set to count toward the grade. Until you release its grades or results, every student scores 0 on it, so totals rise as you release.
  • Search with “Search students…”, or sort by Student.
  • Open a student by choosing their name (see below).
To change how much each category is worth, open ⋮ and choose Grade breakdown. It takes you to the course’s Settings tab; see publish a course.

Export the gradebook

1

Open the menu

On the Assessments tab, open ⋮ and choose Export gradebook.
2

Choose the columns

Tick Percentages (each category’s weighted share, adding up to the total), Scores (points earned out of points set, such as 12/20), or both.
3

Export

Choose Export. You can keep working while Lena prepares it, and follow its progress in the corner of the screen. The Excel file downloads by itself when it’s ready.

A student’s page

Choose a student’s name in the gradebook to open their page. Its tabs:
  • Overview: their profile, academic details and when they enrolled.
  • Assessment: their grade summary against the class average (“Level with the class”, or how far above or below), a breakdown by category, and Missing work: anything they have no score for yet.
  • Assignment, Quiz and Exam: each piece of work with their score.
  • Activity: what they’ve opened and handed in, in the courses you run. Figures can be up to an hour old.

Engagement

Open the course and choose the Engagement tab. Pick 7 days, 30 days or 90 days. Figures can be up to an hour old.
  • A line at the top says how many students are active: they’ve opened a material or handed something in. See who opens the People tab.
  • Materials opened, with how many were downloaded.
  • Work handed in: assignments, quizzes and exams together.
  • Handed in late: how many, and what share of everything handed in.
  • A chart of activity over the period you picked.
  • Handed in: for each assignment, quiz or exam, how much of the class handed it in on time, late, or not at all. Switch between Assignments, Quizzes and Exams.

One assignment at a time

For a closer look at a single assignment, such as which rubric criterion cost the class the most marks, open it and choose the Insights tab. See grade and release.

Good to know

  • A draft course has neither tab. They appear once you publish it.
  • An ended course keeps both, read-only, and you can still export the gradebook. See end a course.

Troubleshooting

The course has no assignments, quizzes or exams yet. Create one, and students’ grades show up here as they come in.
Nobody has joined the course. Share its entry code; see publish a course.
Your role on this course doesn’t include the gradebook. Assistants can’t see it; ask the course’s owner. See people and roles.
Published work counts as 0 until you release its grades or results. Release them for work that’s finished.

Grade and release

Release grades so they count in the gradebook.

End a course

Release what’s left and make the course read-only.
