End a course when the term is over. Its grades are released to students, nothing in it can be changed any more, and it moves to Past. Teaching it again? Duplicate it first, so next term starts with your materials and work already in place. The course’s Owner and Teachers can do both.

Duplicate a course

You can duplicate a published course or one that has ended. A draft can’t be duplicated.
1

Choose Duplicate

Open the course, choose ⋮ (More actions), then Duplicate Course. On the Courses page, the row’s ⋮ menu has Duplicate too.
2

Pick what comes along

Tick what to copy: Course Outline, Study materials, Class schedules, Assignments, Quizzes and Exam. Nothing is ticked at first.
3

Duplicate it

Choose Duplicate. The copy opens, and a message says what came along.
The copy is a new draft, and you’re its owner. It has its own entry code, and no students or co-teachers. Copied assignments, quizzes and exams are drafts with no dates. Before you publish the copy, add a rule for who can join, and set new dates on the work.

End a course

1

Choose End Course

Open the course, choose ⋮ (More actions), then End Course. The end-course page opens.
2

Clear what Needs you

Anything under Needs you stops the course ending:
  • Students taking an exam or quiz. They need to finish first. Choose Check again once they have.
  • Grades in review. Lena Agent graded these and you haven’t checked them yet. Open the row to see each grade. Choose a student’s name to check their work, or Confirm to accept a grade as it is. Review all accepts every one without opening them, and Review high accepts only the ones Lena is most sure of.
3

Read What happens

What happens lists what ending will do to this course. For example, it tells you how many grades will be released, who gets 0 for handing nothing in, and which drafts will be deleted. It also warns you about work nobody has graded. Those students end up with no grade for it.
4

End it

Choose End course, type the course’s name to confirm, and choose End course again.
Ending a course can’t be undone. There’s no way to reopen it. Grade any submissions you want counted before you end it.

Past courses

Ended courses are on the Courses page under Past. You can’t edit a past course or add work to it, it has no entry code, and no one can reply to its discussions or announcements. Students can still read everything in it. You can still:
  • Export grades. On the Assessments tab, choose ⋮, then Export gradebook. See gradebook and engagement.
  • Duplicate it for next term.
  • Delete it, if you’re the owner. Choose ⋮, then Delete Course. This removes the course and everything in it for good.

Courses open for over a year

If a course has been running for more than a year, its page says “This course has been open for over a year. When it’s done, end it.” Choose end it to go to the end-course page, or close the notice.

Troubleshooting

Something under Needs you is still open. If students are taking an exam or a quiz, wait until they finish, then choose Check again. If grades are in review, confirm them. Then end the course.
The course is still a draft. Publish it first, or create a new course.
Only a published course can be ended, by its owner or a teacher on it.
