The outline tells students what the course covers and when: the topics, readings and work for each week. Each course has one. The course’s Owner and Teachers can write and edit it. Everyone else on the course, students included, can read it.
At a K-12 school the tab is Scheme of Work and its button says Add scheme. Everything else works the same.

Add the outline

1

Open the Outline tab

Open the course and choose Outline. You can do this while the course is still a draft.
2

Start it

Choose Add outline. The editor opens.
3

Write it

Type in the editor, or paste from a document you already have. Use the toolbar for headings, lists, links and images. A heading per week, such as “Week 1: Research methods”, makes it easy to scan.
4

Attach files, if you like

Choose Attach files below the editor and add files students should have with the outline, such as the full syllabus as a PDF.
5

Save it

Choose Save. Students see it on the course’s Outline tab.

Change it

Choose Edit outline, make your changes, and choose Save. Cancel leaves the outline as it was. To remove the outline, delete everything in it, attachments included, and save.

Good to know

  • Each image or attached file can be up to 10 MB.
  • Assistants and student assistants can read the outline but not change it.
  • Search finds outlines. Choose the Outlines filter in search to find a topic across your courses.
  • The outline can come along when you duplicate a course. Tick Course Outline in the duplicate dialog.
  • Once a course has ended, its outline can’t be changed. Students can still read it.

Troubleshooting

The image or file is over 10 MB. Make it smaller, or split it into parts, and try again.
Only the course’s owner and teachers can edit the outline. If you’re an assistant, ask the owner to make the change. Once a course has ended, no one can edit its outline.
