Assignment in the sidebar lists the assignments from all your courses. You can hand in each one only once, so read the question and the rubric before you start.

Find it

The list has three tabs:
  • Open: assignments you can still work on. Each shows when it’s due.
  • Practice: assignments with nothing to hand in.
  • Past: assignments whose dates have passed, or whose course has ended.
The Status column shows where you are:
  • Not submitted: you haven’t handed it in yet.
  • Awaiting grade: you’ve handed it in, but it isn’t graded yet.
  • In person: you hand it in on paper, not in Lena.
  • Your score, like 8 / 10.
If you see “Still open — you can submit” under a due date that has passed, you can still hand it in late.

Hand it in

1

Open the assignment and read it

The Details tab shows the rules: whether you type your answer, upload files or both, the total marks, the due date, and whether late work is accepted. The Question tab says what to do. To keep a copy, choose Save assignment.
2

Check the rubric

If there’s a Rubric tab, it shows how your work will be marked. It lists each thing your lecturer will look at, and how many points each level of work earns.

The rubric shows what each level of work earns.

3

Write your answer

Choose Submit at the top of the assignment. On the Submit assignment page, type your answer in the box, unless the assignment only takes files. To see the question while you write, choose Show question.
4

Attach your files

Skip this if the assignment takes typed answers only. Choose Attach files, then pick your files. If there’s something your lecturer should know, add a Note for your Lecturer. Only your lecturer can see it.

5

Submit, once you’re sure

Choose Submit at the bottom of the page, then Submit again to confirm. After this, you can’t change your work or hand it in again.

You can see what you handed in, and when, on the Your submission tab.

Good to know

  • You can hand it in only once. You can’t edit it or send it again, so check your answer and your files first.
  • Lena doesn’t save your work as you go. If you leave the submit page, what you typed is lost. For a long answer, write it somewhere else first, then paste it in.
  • Late work is accepted only if your lecturer allows it. The Late submissions row on Details says until when. After that, the assignment shows Missed.
  • Each file must be under 10 MB (15 MB for a video). Documents, PDFs, pictures, videos, audio and .zip files are fine. Programs, other compressed files (like .rar) and Office files with macros aren’t accepted. See Lena won’t accept my file.
  • No internet? You can still submit, files included. You’ll see “Submission queued”, and the assignment shows “Submission saved” until Lena sends it, as soon as you’re back online. It counts when it reaches Lena, so if the deadline is close, get back online before it passes.
  • Grades come all at once. Your lecturer releases grades for the whole class together. Until then, you see Awaiting grade. When grades are released, anyone who didn’t hand in gets 0. See your grades and feedback.

Troubleshooting

The assignment hasn’t started. The message says when it opens.
The reason is underneath. “The deadline has passed” or “The late deadline has passed” means it’s closed: talk to your lecturer. “This assignment is submitted in person” means you hand it in on paper.
Make the file smaller, for example by saving it as a PDF or taking photos at a lower size. Or save it as a different kind of file, like a PDF or Word document.
On some older browsers, Lena can’t keep files on your device while you’re offline. Reconnect, then submit.
The assignment needs something from you. Type an answer, attach a file, or both, as the Details tab asks.
You handed it in offline, and when it reached Lena it couldn’t be accepted, for example because the deadline had passed by then. The message says why. Choose Open your work: it’s still on your device, so you can send it again or talk to your lecturer.
