# Words your school uses

> See what Lena calls courses, teachers, classes and student numbers at a university, a K-12 school or another kind of school.

When someone creates a school in Lena, they choose what kind of school it is: **University**, **K-12** or **Other**
(training centres, tutoring and anything else). Lena then uses that kind of school's words everywhere, for everyone at
the school. You can't change the kind later.

## The words

| | University | K-12 | Other |
| - | - | - | - |
| A course is a… | Course | Subject | Course |
| Its name and code | Course title, Course alias/code | Subject title, Subject alias/code | Course title, Course alias/code |
| Someone who teaches is a… | Lecturer | Teacher | Instructor |
| The school is organised by… | Faculty, then Department, then Level | Grade, then Arm | Cohort (optional), then Program, then Group (optional) |
| In Lena for Schools that's managed in… | Faculty Management | Grade Management | Cohort Management |
| A course runs in a… | Semester (first or second) | Term (first, second or third) | No term or semester |
| A course's plan is its… | Course Outline (the **Outline** tab) | Scheme of Work | Course Outline (the **Outline** tab) |
| A student's number is their… | Matric number | Class/Admission Number (Class Number in lists) | Student ID |
| A lecturer's number is their… | Staff ID | Staff ID | Instructor ID |

Some examples of how they read together:

* **University**: "Introduction to Psychology" (PSY 101), Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, 100 Level,
first semester, taught by a lecturer.
* **K-12**: "Mathematics", JSS 2 in arm A (written "JSS 2A"), second term, taught by a teacher.
* **Other**: a program such as Data Analysis, inside a cohort for this year's intake, split into groups, taught by
  an instructor.

## Words that don't change

Assignments, quizzes, exams, grades, discussions, announcements, study materials and the calendar have the same names
everywhere. So do the roles on a course (**Owner**, **Teacher**, **Assistant**, **Student assistant**) and the roles at
a school (**Superadmin**, **Academic admin**, **Non-academic admin**). On a course, **Teacher** is the role of anyone
who teaches it, whatever the school calls them.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **This site uses the university words**: course, lecturer, faculty, department, level and semester. If your school is
> K-12 or another kind, read them as your own words from the table above. Pages point out the differences where they
> matter.
