# Notifications and your inbox

> Turn on push notifications, read and filter your inbox, and choose what Lena tells you about.

Lena for Teachers and Lena for Students tell you when something needs you in two ways: a **push notification** on
your device, and a note in your **inbox** in the app. Lena for Schools doesn't send notifications.

## Turn on push notifications

**1. Choose Enable notifications**

A "Turn on notifications" banner shows until you decide. Choose **Enable notifications**. You can also go to
**Settings** → **Notifications** and choose **Enable** next to **Browser notifications**.

**2. Allow them in your browser**

Your browser asks whether Lena may show notifications. Choose **Allow**. Settings then reads **Enabled**.

Turn push on separately on each device you use, such as your phone and your laptop. Signing out stops push on that
device.

> [!NOTE]
>
> On an iPhone or iPad, add Lena to your Home Screen first (see [Lena on your
> phone](https://support.lena.africa/get-started/phone-and-offline.md#install-lena-from-your-browser)). Open Lena from the Home Screen, then turn
> notifications on.

## Your inbox

Choose the bell at the top of the page. It shows how many notes are unread.

* **Mark all read** clears the unread count.
* **Filter** shows only **Unread**, or only one type: **Work**, **Grades**, **Discussions**, **Announcements** or
  **Courses**.
* Choose a note to open what it's about. If it's at another school, Lena asks before switching.
* "You're all caught up" means there's nothing new.

A notification that arrives while you're in the app shows as a small message with a button such as **View grade**,
**View reply** or **Open quiz**.

## What you're told about

> [tab] Students
>
> * **Assignments**: new assignments, and when your grade is released
> * **Quizzes & exams**: when one opens for you
> * **Discussions**: when a new discussion starts
> * **Announcements** from your courses
> * **Replies**: when someone replies to you
> * **Due reminders**: a day before an assignment or quiz is due
> * **Grades by email**: an email when your grades are released

> [tab] Teachers
>
> * **Replies**: when someone replies to you
> * **Ready to grade**: work handed in for assignments you made
> * **Morning message**, if your school has Lena Agent: a push and an inbox note at 7:00 AM when work is waiting. Turn
> it off in **Settings** → **School**. See [daily brief](https://support.lena.africa/agent/daily-brief.md).
>
> You aren't told when you create or publish something yourself.

## Choose what you get

Go to **Settings** → **Notifications**.

* **Push** ("Notify me on my devices") turns push notifications on or off.
* **In-app notifications** ("Keep them in my inbox in the app") turns inbox notes on or off.
* Under **Notify me about**, switch each kind on or off. Each switch covers both push and the inbox.
* To quieten one busy discussion, open it, choose **⋮**, then **Mute notifications**. **Unmute** turns them back on.

## Troubleshooting

> [accordion] Settings says “Blocked in your browser settings”
>
> You, or your browser, said no when Lena asked, and Lena can't ask again. Open your browser's settings for Lena
> (often the icon to the left of the address), set **Notifications** to **Allow**, then reload the page.

> [accordion] I get notifications on my laptop but not my phone
>
> Push is turned on for each device separately. Open Lena on your phone and choose **Enable notifications** there.

> [accordion] The banner has gone, but notifications aren’t on
>
> You dismissed it. Turn them on from **Settings** → **Notifications** instead.

> [accordion] “Couldn’t load your notification preferences. Refresh to try again.”
>
> Check that you're online, then reload the page.
