# Find anything with search

> Open search with ⌘K or Ctrl+K to find courses, work, files, students and people, jump to a page, or start something new.

Every Lena app has a search box. It finds things, takes you to pages and starts new things. Press <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd> on a
Mac or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd> elsewhere, or choose **Search** in the sidebar. To close it, press the shortcut
again or press <kbd>Esc</kbd>.

## In Lena for Teachers

**1. Open search**

Press <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd> or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd>. On a phone, tap the search icon in the top bar.

**2. Type at least two characters, then press Enter**

Results don't appear as you type. Type a name or a word, such as "memory", and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> (the top row
reads Search for "memory").

**3. Open a result**

Move with <kbd>↑</kbd> and <kbd>↓</kbd> and press <kbd>Enter</kbd>, or click it.

![The teacher search window with results for memory, grouped into kinds such as Files and Outlines](https://mintcdn.com/lenaafrica/L730hi-OSS5z45py/images/teacher/command-menu.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=L730hi-OSS5z45py\&q=85\&s=2499a4270d2934ea574a467a344f49c7)

Results grouped by kind: courses, materials, outlines, work and more.

**Narrow it with a chip.** Under the box, choose **All**, **Courses**, **Assignments**, **Quizzes**, **Exam**,
**Announcements**, **Discussions**, **Files**, **Outlines** or **Students** (and **Agent chats** if your school has Lena
Agent). Search starts on the chip for the section you're in. Open it from the Quiz section, for example, and it starts on
**Quizzes**. A chip with nothing typed shows your recent items of that kind.

**Find a student.** Choose the **Students** chip, type part of their name and press <kbd>Enter</kbd>. Pick the student
to see the courses they share with you, then a course to open their page in it. If you share only one course,
pressing <kbd>Enter</kbd> goes straight there.

**Start something new.** Search also lists **Quick Actions**: **New course**, **New assignment**, **New quiz**,
**New exam**, **New discussion**, **New announcement** and **New agent chat**. You see only the ones you're allowed
to do.

Files open in a new tab; outlines open on the course's **Outline** tab.

## In Lena for Students

Search finds your enrolled courses as you type, and jumps to any section (**Courses**, **Assignment**, **Quiz**,
**Exam**, **Grades** and so on) or to **Enrol Course**. It doesn't search inside courses. On a phone, open the menu
(top left) and choose **Search**.

## In Lena for Schools

Search finds pages (Settings among them), quick actions such as inviting a student, and people: students, lecturers
and admins. People appear once you've typed two characters. Lena shows only the closest few of each, so type more of
the name if you don't see the person. Search doesn't find courses or your school's structure. Use the search box on
those pages instead.

## Recents

The sidebar's **Recents** list in Lena for Teachers and Lena for Students holds the courses, assignments, quizzes and
exams you opened lately, for the school you're in. **View more** shows more. Each device has its own list.

## Troubleshooting

> [accordion] Nothing happens as I type (teachers)
>
> Teacher search waits for <kbd>Enter</kbd>. Type at least two characters and press it.

> [accordion] “No results found.”
>
> Check the spelling, try part of the name, or choose **All** if a chip is narrowing it. Search only finds things you
> can open yourself. Students: search finds only courses you're enrolled in.

> [accordion] Lena asks me to try again in a moment
>
> Wait a moment, then search again.
